Members and prospective members meet every Thursday from 9pm at the Bull's Head, 30 Wilmslow Road, Handforth, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 3EWClick here for a map.

We always welcome newcomers and an evening in the pub is a good opportunity to find out about forthcoming events and to meet some of the members.  We have a notice board at the pub on Thursday nights which displays information about our events.

Most of the people at the pub on Thursday evenings belong to the Thursday Group so if you are new please make yourself known and ask to be introduced to a committee member.  If you find coming in to the pub on your own rather daunting, then telephone one of the people on our Contact page and they will arrange to meet you inside the pub or in the car park. Whilst you have to be unattached when you join, a number of members have met partners within the group, so you will meet couples as you socialise.

Weekly Social Night
Walking
We are fortunate to live in an area where there is wonderful countryside for walking and the Thursday Group takes full advantage of this.  As well as enjoying the countryside and getting some exercise, walking is an excellent way of getting to know people.

Details of our past and present walks are listed on the Calendar page.  You will see that they tend to be 6-9 miles long and take up much of the day, often with easier, shorter walks on Wednesdays and harder, longer ones on Sundays - but this is not a cast-iron rule!  Some of the group go for a drink and/or a meal at the end of the walk.

Guidance for Walkers
Please be aware that we could be walking across muddy fields on some part of the walk and you do need to wear reasonably sturdy water-proof boots. Depending on weather conditions we recommend that you bring an anorak, an extra layer of warm clothing, gloves and over-trousers. If you have not done much walking we would suggest that you choose to go on the low level easier walks initially and join the more strenuous walks when you have gained in fitness and confidence.  The walk organiser will be able to tell you what refreshments, drinks, food, etc you need to bring with you.
Please note that you are responsible for your own safety during our walks.  The Thursday Group does not accept any liability whatsoever in the unlikely event of an accident.

Badminton
We play badminton at two venues each week

* Knutsford Leisure Centre
at Westfield Drive, Knutsford, WA16 OBL between 7.30 - 8.30 on Fridays

* Cheadle Hulme Sports Centre
, Wood's Lane, Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, SK8 7JX between 7.00 - 8.00 on Wednesdays and Friday

Everyone is welcome to come along, even if it is a long time since you have played badminton - or even if you have never played before! After the game many of us go for a meal together in a local pub.

You'll need your own raquet, and to bring a towel if you want a shower after the session.
Dining Out
As you can see from our Calendar, meals are organised by members at a variety of restaurants; some meals include live entertainment, and there is at least one formal dinner dance each year.  This is an excellent way to make new friends in a relaxed and informal setting.

Members who play badminton on Wednesday and Friday nights usually go for a meal when they finish,  and many of the walks finish with a meal too.
Theatre
Many of us enjoy going to the theatre with friends.

For those who enjoy theatre productions, members arrange visits to the Royal Exchange and the Lowry in Manchester, and outdoor shows at Gawsworth Hall.  We are also lucky to have several excellent amateur dramatic companies in the area such as the Garrick Theatre, Altrincham, CHADS, and The Green Room, Wilmslow.  You can see our past and future bookings by clicking here.

We group-buy tickets, and often arrange to travel together, especially if the performance is in the middle of Manchester or some distance away.

Music
Musical Performances

The Thursday Group Calendar offers lots of entertainment possibilities from pop to classical music.

We have been to sessions by tribute bands and other pop artists, and members also go together to enjoy the Halle, the Manchester Camerata, and Stockport Symphony Orchestra.  Members arrange visits to the opera, including Clonter opera, and also locally screened performances of operas being staged internationally.

Recorder Group

The Recorder Group meets every 2 - 3 weeks playing classics by Monteverdi, Bach and a host of other composers as well as some jazz and spirituals.  In 2011 the group went to a 3-day Recorder Fest in Hertfordshire which is set to become an annual event.

The group is primarily a recorder ensemble, but if we think the balance would work other instruments would be considered.  Members are welcome to join in whether they are beginners wanting to play in a group for the first time, or good players who are happy to help others share their enjoyment of music making.

Dancing
Dancing is a popular Thursday Group activity, and members go to a variety of local dances - modern jive, ballroom dancing and the occasional Ceilidh or two.

These events are put on by outside organisations and it can be difficult to know who is a Thursday Group member,  but if you are new and wish to meet up with others from the Group, let us know you are coming so that we can arrange to look out for you.

There is also at least one formal dinner dance each year.
More !
We try to have at least one event every Saturday night and, whenever possible, other nights of the week too.

In addition there are many other activities on offer including dinner dances, BBQs, 10-pin bowling, quizzes, river cruises, house parties, golf days, pitch-and-putt evenings, and days out to exhibitions etc.

If that's not enough we also have short holidays away together - walking, dancing, making music, sailing and recently a Murder Mystery weekend.  Some of these are Thursday Group events, others are organised by the members informally amongst themselves.

Come and join us
to see what we are organising next!
