Please have a look at some of the Thursday Group activities

We always welcome prospective members who should initially contact the membership secretary so we can look out for you and an evening in the pub is a good opportunity to find out about forthcoming events and to meet some of the members. If you are a new or prospective member, please make yourself known and ask to be introduced to a committee member. Alternatively, you may wish to come along to one of our New Members Meetings which are held on the first Thursday of every month at 8.00pm.

If you find coming in to the pub on your own rather daunting, then contact the membership secretary on our Contact section and they will arrange to meet you inside the pub or in the car park. Whilst you have to be unattached when you join, a number of members have met partners within the group, so you will meet couples as you socialise.

Walking

We are fortunate to live in an area where there is wonderful countryside for walking and the Thursday Group takes full advantage of this. As well as enjoying the countryside and getting some exercise, walking is an excellent way of getting to know people.

Details of our past and present walks are listed on the Calendar page. You will see that they tend to be 4-8 miles long and take up much of the day. Some of the group go for a drink and/or a meal at the end of the walk.

Guidance for Walkers
Please be aware that we could be walking across muddy fields on some part of the walk and you do need to wear reasonably sturdy waterproof boots. Depending on weather conditions we recommend that you bring a waterproof coat, an extra layer of warm clothing, gloves and over-trousers. If you have not done much walking we would suggest that you choose to go on the low level easier walks initially and join the more strenuous walks when you have gained in fitness and confidence. The walk organiser will be able to tell you what refreshments, drinks, food, etc. you need to bring with you.
Please note that you are responsible for your own safety during our walks. The Thursday Group does not accept any liability whatsoever in the unlikely event of an accident.
Please contact the walk organiser to book on the walk so that they know you are coming.

Badminton

Badminton

Badminton is played weekly at Cheadle Hulme Sports Centre, Woods Lane, Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, SK8 7JX between 7.00 - 8.00 on Wednesdays (for more advanced players) and Fridays.

Everyone is welcome to come along, even if it is a long time since you have played badminton - or even if you have never played before! After the game occasionally some may go for a drink or meal together in a local pub.

You'll need your own racquet, and to bring a towel if you want a shower after the session.

Table Tennis

Table Tennis

Table tennis is played every week on a Tuesday from 5.30pm to 6.45pm at Cheadle Hulme Recreation Centre, Woods Lane, SK8 7JX. Please note that the number is restricted to 24. After the game occasionally some may go for a drink or meal together in a local pub.

Book Club

Book Club

We are a group of more than a dozen and we pick a book to read every month. We meet every 4-6 weeks at the Railway pub in Handforth.

Dining Out

Dining Out

As you can see from our Calendar, meals are organised by members at a variety of restaurants; some meals include live entertainment, and there is at least one formal dinner dance each year. This is an excellent way to make new friends in a relaxed and informal setting.

Theatre

Theatre

For those who enjoy theatre productions, members arrange visits to Manchester and local theatres

Musical Performances

Musical Performances

The Thursday Group Calendar offers lots of entertainment possibilities from pop to classical music.

We have been to sessions by tribute bands and other pop artists, and members also go together to enjoy the Halle, the Manchester Camerata, and Stockport Symphony Orchestra. Members arrange visits to the opera, including Clonter Opera, and also locally screened performances of operas being staged internationally.

Members have also taken part themselves in singing groups, and playing musical instruments especially at Christmas, and even had a go at karaoke at Garden Parties.

Dancing

Dancing

Dancing is a popular Thursday Group activity, and members go to a variety of local dances - modern jive, ballroom dancing and an occasional Ceilidh or two.

These events are put on by outside organisations and it can be difficult to know who is a Thursday Group member, but if you are new and wish to meet up with others from the Group, let us know you are coming so that we can arrange to look out for you.

There is also at least one formal dinner dance each year.

More !!

We try to have at least one event every Saturday night and, whenever possible, other nights of the week too.

Also, there are many other activities on offer including dinner dances, BBQs, 10-pin bowling,
quizzes, river cruises, house parties, bowls and days out to exhibitions etc.

If that's not enough we also have holidays away together - walking, dancing, skiing, snow shoe walking, sailing.
We have been all over Europe including Austria, Croatia, Cyprus and Spain, as well as in the UK.
Some of these are Thursday Group events, others are organised by the members informally amongst themselves.

Come and join us and see what we are organising next!
